| The alarm rang out at 5 a.m. It was a dark, winter morning thick with fog. Sleepy, but excited, I jumped up and readied myself for the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators 7th Annual Winter Conference. It was the first such conference for me, as an eager artist with dreams of breaking into the world of children's book illustrating. After gathering my sketch book and pens, I guzzled my third cup of coffee and set off into the menacing rain. I was on my way. Next stop: The Hilton Hotel, Avenue of the Americas, New York City.
By the time I had walked from Penn Station to 54th Street, my trousers were stuck to the back of my legs. Why didn't I hail a cab? |
